About Newport
Port of the Pend Oreille

Nestled along the Pend Oreille River at the Washington-Idaho border, Newport is a welcoming community of just over 2,000 residents offering small-town hospitality, four distinct seasons, and easy access to over a million acres of public land. Sitting at a comfortable elevation of 2,160 feet, this charming city blends pioneer heritage with modern amenities, making it an ideal home base for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a slower pace of life.

Rich History and Lasting Character

Newport's story began in 1889 when a store opened on the Idaho side of the settlement. A post office followed in 1890, with the name "Newport" chosen in hopes of attracting river traffic. When the Great Northern Railroad built a depot on the Washington side in 1892, the community shifted west and thrived as an outfitting center for nearby mines.

That railroad heritage lives on today at the Pend Oreille County Historical Museum, housed in the original Northern Railroad Depot. The museum grounds feature a restored caboose, pioneer schoolhouse and church, fire lookout tower, settler's cabin, logging bunkhouse, and displays of farm equipment and Native American artifacts, a window into the region's frontier past.

Outdoor Recreation Without Limits

For those who love the outdoors, Newport delivers. The Colville National Forest encompasses 1.1 million acres of wilderness just waiting to be explored. Hike hundreds of miles of trails through pristine backcountry, camp in developed campgrounds or find solitude in remote wilderness sites, and discover prime opportunities for fishing, hunting, horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, and off-road adventures. Winter brings excellent cross-country and downhill skiing, plus snowmobiling through snow-covered forests.

For a truly unique experience, drive the International Selkirk Loop, North America's only multi-national scenic byway. This 280-mile route encircles the spectacular Selkirk Mountains through Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia, passing crystal-clear rivers, pristine lakes, snow-capped peaks, and abundant wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, and countless wild birds.

Community Events and Small-Town Charm

Newport's calendar comes alive with community gatherings throughout the year. The Pend Oreille Valley Lavender Festival brings local artists, artisans, and growers to Newport City Park each summer, featuring handmade crafts, lavender workshops, and live demonstrations. Year-round, the town's welcoming downtown offers local shops, eateries, and the kind of genuine hospitality that makes newcomers feel at home.

With Spokane and its international airport less than an hour's drive south, Newport offers the best of both worlds, rural mountain living with easy access to urban amenities when you need them.
