About Townsend
Valley of Adventure

Situated in the Missouri River Valley between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains, Townsend occupies one of Montana's most desirable locations, where the Missouri River opens into Canyon Ferry Lake, the state's third largest body of water and a year-round recreation destination. It's no wonder the area earned its nickname: the "Valley of Adventure."

Extensive History

Lewis and Clark passed through the Townsend area during the Voyage of Discovery in 1805, though the first homesteaders and Civil War veterans seeking gold didn't arrive until the late 1860s. In 1883, a rail stop was established in anticipation of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and the town was named after the maiden name of Charles B. Wright's wife, Wright being the railroad's president. During those early years, a $10,000 hotel was built, and plots of land were sold for just $5 apiece. That pioneering spirit still runs through Townsend today.

Year-Round Recreation on Canyon Ferry Lake

Townsend's location at the southern tip of Canyon Ferry Lake makes it a haven for boaters, anglers, and water lovers of all kinds. Summer brings endless days of boating, water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, and fishing, while winter transforms the frozen lake into a paradise for ice fishing, dotted with huts and tents from anglers chasing walleye and perch. The Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area also offers excellent bird watching and wildlife viewing throughout the year.

The "Banana Belt" Advantage

Thanks to the sheltering embrace of the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains, Townsend enjoys milder winters than much of Montana, earning the valley its "Banana Belt" nickname. Beyond the comfortable climate, the surrounding mountains provide prime hunting territory along with outstanding opportunities for hiking, camping, ATVing, and snowmobiling through rugged backcountry terrain.

A Small-Town Community with Big-Time Events

Townsend stays lively with community events throughout the year. The Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival draws anglers each June, the Townsend Rodeo brings Western tradition to town every August, and Fall Fest celebrates the harvest season each October. The Broadwater County Chamber of Commerce offers information and maps for self-guided tours through historic mining districts and scenic routes in the nearby mountains.
